Ian decided to get down on bended knee and present Sophie with a very nice looking rock in the Hunter Valley last month. Congratulations to Ian and Sophie on their very exciting news.
Sophie is our resident Falls Prevention Physiotherapist and runs our Falls Prevention exercise classes. Her classes are aimed towards the independant elderly who want to keep fit and remain active.
Research shows that up to 1 in 3 people over the age of 60 have a fall each year and about 30% of these may cause injuries that affect your independence and mobility. The most common cause of falls are a loss of strength and fitness as we get older. If you feel you are suffering from any of the below you may be at an increased risk of having a fall:
· poor balance & mobility
· muscle weakness
· poor eyesight
· use of sleeping tablets
· a history of falls
Regular exercise has the potential to improve:
· balance tasks (stand, reach, and step safely)
· reaction time
· body awareness to know if you are starting to fall
· muscle strength to help you stay upright and on your feet
